Reading
This year, your fifth grader will be building comprehension skills using literature and informative text. We will use our Wonders Reading textbooks, novels, and our Social Studies Textbook and related documents to build comprehension skills including:
summarization, inference, main idea and detail support, compare and/or contrast characters, settings, documents, events or topics, vocabulary in context.
Reading grades will come from classwork/practice of reading skills and comprehension tests.
Social Studies
As your student progresses academically, informative text (such as textbooks) plays a larger role. Therefore, a large percentage of our reading material will be Social Studies based. In addition to the factual information on each page and vast practice
with vocabulary in context, our Social Studies textbook and related documents
will provide comprehension practice with: maps, graphs/charts, timelines, artifacts, diagrams, photographs and drawings, diary entries, biographies.
Throughout Reading and Socials Studies we will develop and refine our response to open - ended questions. Social Studies grades will come from daily classwork, projects and tests.
